Prof. Dr. Helton Ramos is Associated professor in the Department of Bioregulation at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), Salvador, Brazil and one of the board-directors of the Latin American Thyroid Society. Graduation in Medicine (1998) in Bahia; Medical residency in Internal Medicine (2002) and Endocrinology (2004) at Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba, Brazil. Fellowship at the University of Chicago Thyroid Unit (2002-2004) under the supervision of Prof. Roy Weiss and Samuel Refetoff. PhD at the Federal University of São Paulo (2007). He has worked, in recent years, in the area of genetics of congenital thyroid diseases, focusing on congenital hypothyroidism and defects in the transport and metabolism of thyroid hormones. From 2008 to 2010 he did his postdoctoral studies at the Paris Descartes University (France), conducted by Professor Michel Polak, working on research related to thyroid hormone transporters, PAX8, TSH receptors and TSH-beta gene defects. From 2016 to 2017 he did a post-doctorate at the Gustave Roussy Institute (Paris SUD University), under the guidance of Prof. Martin Schlumberger, with a focus on advanced medullary thyroid cancer. He is currently head of the UFBA Thyroid Study Laboratory, with research related to the nutritional status of iodine and selenium in the population, molecular biology of thyroid cancer and thyroid dysgenesis.
