I’m BSc (Biomedical
Sciences, University of Mogi das Cruzes, Sao Paulo), MA and PhD (Molecular
Biology, Federal University of Sao Paulo). During my PhD, I had an internship at W. Hasselbach’s lab (Max Planck Institute for Medical
Research, Heidelberg, D), where we demonstrated for the first time that T4
administration increased SERCA expression and activity in rabbit muscles. My post-doc
was at Dr. Chopra’s laboratory, Division of Endocrinology, UCLA. Since 1983, I have been a Professor and
Researcher at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, University of Sao
Paulo; now I’m Full Professor and Head of the Department. We have published
papers across a wide spectrum of thyroid hormone (TH) actions/synthesis. We were
the first to show that T3 posttranscriptionally regulates GH, TSHa&b and
proinsulin mRNAs’ stability and translation rate. We have identified some
molecular events involved on the effect of excess iodine on the Wolff-Chaikoff
effect and escape. We have investigated and published papers on the interplay
between TH and insulin actions and recently our focus is the contribution of TH as
an adjuvant agent in the experimental diabetes mellitus treatment. I’m member
of important Brazilian Scientific Societies, LATS (Executive Committee), Endocrine Society and
European Society of Endocrinology, and of
the advisory and scientific committee of the ERGO project, about Thyroid
Disruptors, at European Commission (Horizon 2020). We have attended
national/international meetings and got some awards. The Brazilian Council for the Development of Science and Technology (CNPq) and
the Support Foundation
for Research of Sao Paulo State (FAPESP) support our studies.
