Dr. Maia is currently a Full Professor of Medicine (UFRGS) and chief of the Thyroid Unit, HCPA. She is interested in basic and clinical aspects of thyroid hormone physiology, particularly on the role of deiodinases in human diseases. She implemented the genetic diagnosis of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2 at her Institution, thenceforth considered as a reference Center to diagnostic and treatment of medullary thyroid carcinoma in South America. She also coordinates several studies on the molecular and clinical aspects of differentiated thyroid carcinomas. Dr. Maia has published over 150 original papers and reviews in peer-reviewed top-ranked journals. Among the numerous awards received including - Young Investigator Award Prof. Thales Martins, LATS-Young Investigator Prize and Fogarty International Research Collaboration Award (FIRCA). She has also been awarded grants from national and international (NIH) agencies. She is a research investigator (1995- ) and has recently served as an-elected member and Coordinator of the Advisory Committee on Medicine (2012-15) on the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq), .Dr. Maia is currently the President of the Latin American Thyroid Society (LATS), which has served several times as an elected-member of the Executive and Scientific Committee. She is also a member of American Thyroid Association (ATA) and Endocrine Society, where she has served as a member of the Task Forces and Committees.
