Anne H. van der Spek completed her medical degree at the University of Amsterdam in 2012. Her interest in both research and endocrinology was first sparked during a 6 month research internship with professors Graham Williams and Duncan Bassett at Imperial College in London in 2009. After obtaining her degree, she was awarded an AMC Graduate School PhD Scholarship, a personal grant funding her PhD research on the role of intracellular thyroid hormone metabolism in innate immune cells under supervision of prof. Eric Fliers and prof. Anita Boelen at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. During her PhD she was a visiting researcher at dr. Arturo Hernandez’s laboratory in Portland, Maine, USA. She successfully defended her PhD thesis in 2018 and continued her postdoctoral research on thyroid hormone metabolism in innate immune cells at the Amsterdam University Medical Center in prof. Boelen’s group. She was recently awarded a Rubicon grant funding 15 months of postdoctoral research which she will be performing in prof. Hollenberg’s laboratory at Weill Cornell Medical Center, NYC, USA in 2021. Besides her research she is currently a resident in Internal Medicine/Endocrinology at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam.
